Chapters 30 and 31 were titled “The Triumph of Conservatism” and “A Nation Transformed” respectively. In 1980, Ronald Regan was elected president of the United States and began the process of adapting conservative values to the United States. The "Triumph" in chapter 30 referred to the victory of conservatism in the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Union. Chapter 31 revolves around globalization that has “transformed” the United States as a nation. Although the Cold War inhibited trade between the United States and the Soviet Union, it also helped America move toward globalization. The globalization of America has encouraged US involvement in foreign affairs. America's involvement in foreign affairs has led to the war on terrorism and economic crisis. As usual, different groups of people experienced the legacy of the Cold War differently. After Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election, he devoted himself to restoring American power, as he mentioned in his speech: “More than anything, I want my candidacy to unify our country; renew the American spirit and sense of purpose.”[ Ronald Reagan, “Acceptance Speech,” US Political History (1973-2001): 2, accessed May 21, 2014, DOI:10.1093/acref/9780199794188.013.0191] Renewing the Spirit American, intended to strengthen American military power. The main purpose of this was to contain the Soviet Union. To maintain its anti-communist policy through military forces, it needs to increase military spending. This is directly associated with US Army life. As military spending increased, they could afford to use more expensive weapons, better clothing, and even better treatment in the military. In a way, Reagan's commitment to pressing the Soviet Union... middle of paper... and America's troubled life harks back to the legacy of the Cold War. Without the Cold War, the United States probably would not be moving so quickly toward globalization and would not be involved in the war in the Middle East. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 finally ended the Cold War. The United States has achieved the final victory as Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: “…the American people in their righteous strength will conquer until absolute victory.” [Franklin D. Roosevelt, “War Message,” US (1920-1945) ): 2, accessed May 21, 2014, DOI: 10.1093/acref/9780199794188.013.0142] However, the legacy of the Cold War had a major influence about various groups of Americans. Increased military spending indicates the improved condition of the US military, technological advancements have provided opportunities for many technological innovators, and globalization has led to economic crisis. This is the broad power of the Cold War legacy.
