Topic > Ethics in Engineering - 1485

Ethics is the moral behavior that guides our actions; it motivates us in our personal behavior and is also relevant in a business context. Many organizations have established a set of guidelines known as a “Code of Ethics”. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, being one such organization, has established its own code as a requirement that student and engineering members must adhere to. Heading towards a career in electrical engineering, I choose this organization to develop my ethical project. In the following paragraphs you will be introduced to the Code of Ethics outlined by the IEEE and what it means for its members. A full summary will be provided for each guideline along with examples of how this code has recently been broken. The vast world of technology, while ever-changing, can affect almost everyone in every aspect of life. This being the case, it is important that we, as students and engineers, adhere to the guidelines established by the IEEE and strive to conduct ourselves to act in a professional and ethical manner. While this is the conduct that IEEE members are expected to follow, many organizations and companies have similar codes that they also expect their members to follow. The initial ethical guidance presented in the IEEE Code of Ethics states “accept responsibility for making decisions consistent with the safety, health, and welfare of the public and for promptly disclosing factors that may endanger the public or the environment.” With respect to the health, safety, and welfare of the public and the environment, many would consider this to be the most important rule presented. Electrical and electronic engineering professions work in the design of electrical systems... middle of paper... punishable by up to 18 months in prison along with a fine of $5,000 for each of these 6 counts (" Former"). In this case Walker would have acted similarly to the example above regarding self-dealing. If the work was performed in a manner that complies with all regulations, the act of self-dealing itself is unethical and leads to OEC investigation. In conclusion, ethics govern everything we do and every aspect in which we operate. When ethics are violated in business, the effects continue to worsen and are absorbed by the consumer. The ways in which these are absorbed differ on a case-by-case basis, whether they affect us financially or physically. Membership in organizations can be helpful in demonstrating credibility. Acting within the organization or association's code of ethics seems to be a small price to pay for this type of benefit.
