Topic > The Impact of Families on The Watchmen's Rorschach...

How an individual is raised can impact their life forever. This idea proved true with two characters from the works studied this semester. Although they come from completely different worlds, the similarities between these two characters and how they approach the world can be associated with the relationships they had with their families. These two characters are Walter “Rorschach” Kovacs, from Alan Moore's graphic novel called Watchmen, and Antoinette, from Jean Rhys' novel called Wide Sargasso Sea. First there is the character of Rorschach. Rorschach is a very angry character, who has a lot of psychological baggage that affects how he sees the world around him. This worldview can be attributed in part to the way he grew up: with an unstable father figure and an abusive mother. It is because of the way he was raised and treated in his early life that Rorschach's personality developed as it did in his adult life. Then there is the character of Antoinette from the novel called The Wide Sargasso Sea. Antoinette is an intelligent woman from a wealthy family, but above all she is a woman desperate for affection and very stubborn. The difficult relationship he had with his mother and with the community in general heavily influenced the development of this personality. Furthermore, Antoinette's eventual mental breakdowns in her adult life can be attributed to the way she was treated throughout her life and the way her husband expected them to develop and treated her accordingly. The families of Rorschach from Watchmen and Antoinette from Wide Sargasso Sea heavily influence the personalities... center of the paper... the references between them. It's interesting to see how different forms of a broken family can manifest and affect individuals' lives, although it's much more interesting that both characters had such difficult childhoods for separate reasons. Their main personalities are extremely different, which is an indicator of the two different worlds they live in. Even with the similarities between them, one can't help but wonder how they would have turned out if their childhood experiences had been different. The fact is that the way individuals are raised by their parents can influence their lives with great power. This is why Rorschach and Antoinette are so similar. Works Cited Moore, Alan.
