It is instrumental in helping Hamlet develop and ultimately deliver different messages and tones throughout the story. In Kenneth Branagh's film Fortinbras is seen seeking revenge for his father's death. Hamlet and Fortinbras' worldview are very similar, in terms of family and loyalty, which is why they are never in conflict with each other. Before Hamlet meets Fortibras, he is seen wearing black clothing, which once again shows the theme of darkness. He always plots a way to kill Claudio but at the same time always finds an excuse not to do it. Once Hamlet meets Fortinbras, his mood changes and he realizes that he can actually solve this problem around him. Hamlet states, “What is a man if his chief good and market of his time is but sleep and food… to look before and after, hath not given us that capacity and a divine reason to melt into us unused. ..if I have cause, will and strength" and intends to do it” (Act 4, scene 4, page 2) After this speech about his new hope, he begins to wear white clothing noticeably during the fencing match, contradicting the darkness of the entire comedy. Hamlet meeting Fortinbras shows existentialism because after meeting Fortinbras, Hamlet realizes that he must make his own decisions. Another important message is that being well-rounded and relying on advice pays off. At the end of the film Fortibras is made king for his impeccable character.
