Sacrifice is the act of giving up something precious for the sake of something else deemed more important or worthy. A simple word in the dictionary, a small word with a big meaning. Noor Waheed is a thirty-six year old who could be called a hero. He went through many obstacles in life to make the decision he made. Noor Waheed is a heroic person because she made such an important decision that is literally her life, she managed to dodge society's hostility, and she is teaching others how to be better people by encouraging them to do good things. At the age of eighteen, she was introduced to Islam. Over the course of a year and a half, he read books to educate himself more about the religion and accepted it. Around the age of twenty, the habit of wearing the hijab or veil began. “Did I start wearing hijab because of my husband? No. Because of the Muslims around me? No. It was my decision” (Waheed). Addressing the "Stages of a Hero's Journey", created by Joseph Campbell, the two initial stages displayed here would be his "Call to Adventure" and his "Meeting the Mentor". “I wanted to build a better life” (Waheed). Islam, being a religion of peace and serenity, was the perfect way to start a new life. The more Waheed gained knowledge about one of the greatest religions out there, she felt like she was drawn to do what she did with no regrets about doing it. Her choice to convert to Islam was only made with the help of her good friend Sumaiyah. “I had a friend, her name was Sumaiyah. She was born Muslim and taught me everything I needed to know to convert” (Waheed). Sumaiyah was, in this case, Waheed's mentor. He taught her everything from the fundamentals of the Muslim faith, to middle-of-the-road experiences and the spread of Islam. He brought back knowledge and wisdom from his so-called ride. To conclude, Noor Waheed is one of the many oppressed women and she decided to take action for what she believed in. In the eyes of many people, she is a true hero. A heroine who went through so much to resist. Waheed converted many people with her persuasive and informative speeches and became a well-known person in her community. People around her look at her with adoring eyes because she is caring and charitable. It takes commitment and perseverance to get through the roller coaster called life. Noor Waheed's story will be memorable to those who gain knowledge of it. “If you don't have the drive to achieve a goal, there is no way to succeed” (Waheed). Works Cited Waheed, Noor.
