Topic > Who manages the farm? Pigs - 1438

Propaganda is used to trick people into thinking or believing something that may not actually be true. Occurs when information of a biased or misleading nature is used to promote or publicize a particular cause or political point of view (dictionary). In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, the animals rebel against the owner of the human farm and take over the leaders of the upper class animals, the pigs. Orwell wrote Animal Farm to represent and symbolize Russia and the Soviet Union under the rule of the Communist Party. Pigs are extremely similar to Joseph Stalin and his success in manipulating taking on the role of leader for his people. Just as Stalin did in Russia, through the use of propaganda, pigs gain power by manipulating lower-level animals through the use of simplicity and repetition, lying and gaining trust. In Animal Farm, the pigs relate and connect to Joseph Stalin and the Russian Revolution because they both had power and gained leadership through the techniques of agitprop (Stults). “How easily totalitarian propaganda can control the opinion of enlightened people.” -George Orwell. This famous piece of literature, Animal Farm, was written by George Orwell himself between 1917 and 1945 after World War II because farmers wanted to have a better life in general. In the book, Napoleon soon becomes the leader after the rebellion. Just as Stalin had done, Napoleon used military force on animals and intimidated them. Snowball represents Trotsky because he is a forward-thinking politician who wants to improve and help out with the windmill, but is chased by ferocious dogs that Napoleon sends before he can do so. Like Stalin, the pigs accumulate and gain their power by manipulating animals with propaganda techniques. animals are too stupid to realize they are being treated unfairly. Since pigs have advantages when it comes to being intelligent, they take advantage of the fact that the animals have no idea what is really going on. Although pigs rarely do anything, they receive multiple portions of food. Towards the end of the book, the animals see that while they are working hard on the farm, the pigs are inside drinking and talking to the humans. Even if they don't realize it, they are not treated equally. Pigs have a lot of power over the animals because they know that the animals may not realize that they are doing all the work. The animals believe that the pigs tell the truth. Because of this, pigs take full advantage of this and choose to slow down and take the animals' trust for granted.
