Laura shows her personality on the many occasions she helps Amanda and Tom settle. She isn't interested in what her family says about her, but rather in the question of fixing the relationship they have. This is evident in many parts of the work. For example, in one of the scenes, Laura says to Tom after arguing with Amanda: “Tom, talk to mom this morning. Make peace with her, apologize to her, talk to her!” (Williams 938). Laura wants them to talk again because the fight makes her mother anxious. Laura also feels a lot of pressure from her mother because she wants Laura to behave in a desired way. Laura expresses this when she tells Amanda “Mother: I'm just not as popular as you were in Blue Mountain… Mother's afraid I'll become an old maid” (Williams 928). Amanda pressures Laura on many occasions and tells Laura to succeed; this is something every mother wants for their children. However, Amanda doesn't pay attention to the signs Laura presents. Amanda knows that Laura has a "little flaw" but prefers to avoid it rather than face it. For Amanda the solution is to marry Laura. Tom also says that Laura is different.
