The film Sherrybaby depicts a young woman struggling to pick up her life where she left off after being released from prison. He tries to rebuild his life but encounters many obstacles along the way. She tries to rekindle her relationship with her daughter Alexis, while struggling to stay clean from her heroin addiction. He also seems to have difficulty forming relationships with people in his middle and using his sexuality to get ahead in the career field. She's in over her head as she tries to pick up exactly where she left off three years ago. Despite her positive attitude, we witness the challenges she faces with low self-esteem, substance abuse, and guilt over leaving her daughter Alexis to be raised by her brother and sister-in-law. At the beginning of the film, as he tries to establish the basic things needed to get his life back, we see how he uses his sexual allure to get what he wants. When talking to her parole officer, Sherry tries to use her good looks to convince him to see her family in New Jersey. After he quickly realizes this, a dissatisfied Sherry sulks using the excuse that she hasn't seen her daughter in years. “Indeed, family contact was participants' key motivation for maintaining their recovery” (Duffy & Baldwin, 2013). Perhaps his parolee, having dealt with similar cases to Sherry, has seen the effects that family isolationism has had on recovery. It's clear he's not on her game, but he still allows her to visit her brother and daughter. Arriving at her new home, Sherry is introduced to the director of the shelter where we find them in the basement sexually involved. Once again, we see Sherry use her good looks as she tries to find…the medium of paper…use, recovery from use, and personal identity” (Brener, Hippel, & Hippel, 2012) . Sherry recognizes her addiction and wants to detox. This theory could be useful for predicting future drug use among people who are trying to quit and are likely to complete treatment. He soon discovers that things aren't as easy or as expected. During her first real parenting experience, Sherry realizes that she still can't handle life on her own. In order for Sherry to have a chance at rekindling her relationship with her daughter Alexis, she must be willing to accept her weaknesses and accept the past. As the film unfolds, it is clear that he has issues from his past that are kept at bay by reflecting on where he is in life. It is Sherry's desire for change that will ultimately determine whether she gets a second chance at life.
