Mak, Chiang Leung, Chui & Leung (2013, p.1184) state that “Lifelong learning involves the development of skills in critical thinking (CT), effective group processes (GP ), and self-direction (SDL)”. To formulate such a sentence requires that research on lifelong learning has been conducted. From the research I have conducted, I can say that my questions have not been fully answered. However, my research has shown that reading is a cognitive task that involves critical thinking and lifelong learning in the area of reading throughout a person's life. The research assignment began with a fundamental question: how do you effectively teach reading in a primary school context? ? To develop a deeper understanding, the question was broken down into three questions. These questions formed the basis of my research. Graham & Kelly (2012) stated that reading is a complex cognitive task performed by students. An interview with a literacy coach allows you to make a connection between your findings and past research. It was realized by the way the interviewee explains how the students did not understand while reading and only decoded the words. Therefore, when someone reads, they must understand the meaning, decode the words, while also focusing on grammar and punctuation. This requires tremendous effort and cognitive thinking since students are not just doing a single task. Additionally, students need to realize that when they understand the meaning of words, as some can have multiple meanings. There seems to be a change in the education system as the syllabus and assessment are changed. The change is happening so that teachers can clearly see whether student comprehension is being assessed as well as student fluency and grammar. An interview done with...... half of the paper ...... about the interpretation of this material” (Liedtke & Schulze, p.11 2013). Therefore, students must develop the skills necessary to interpret the different meanings that words have. It was common to see students who had only one interpretation of words. This is why teachers have focused more on developing understanding. By carrying out this research assignment I developed an understanding of how to effectively teach reading in a primary school setting. Even though my question was answered completely, I realized that these were open-ended questions that change in all sorts of ways over time. This is due to the complexity and ongoing changes in the topic of reading. But my research has shown that reading is a complex activity to teach, supported and challenged past research done on reading, and ultimately the importance of lifelong learning.
