He texted my mother that she had taken off and told her to tell him when she landed. The drive back from Tampa was long and silent. My brother and I stared out the window as my father drove, faint music playing on the car stereo. The weight of my decision had begun to be felt. I was no longer responsible for watching or caring for Amaya. He no longer interrupted me while I was doing my homework to ask if I wanted to play.
