Blacks had suffered under Jim Crow laws for 87 years. From 1877 to 1964, Jim Crow laws were enacted to keep blacks “in their place.” African Americans could not use the same bathrooms, cars, doors, or even windows as whites. Many blacks could not vote in the very first years of the laws. The 1960s were when they finally stopped. The laws were terrible for blacks and this is where we talk about it. From 1800 to 1900, Jim Crow laws were enacted in many forms until their demise. There were so many Jim Crow laws during the 1800s and 1900s. The laws covered almost every single part of daily life in the United States. These were harsh laws and really kept African Americans as second class citizens. One example was that blacks and whites could not be buried in the same cemetery after death. This also applied to their pets, animals belonging to blacks were buried in cemeteries separate from those of whites' pets. Even though they lived in the same places, blacks and whites had little contact with each other. African Americans could not shake hands with whites because it was a sign of equality. In 1935, the state of Oklahoma passed a law that whites and blacks could not be in the same boat. In the 1950s the laws were not as strict as they were in previous years. Despite the difficulties for African Americans, the laws were still very harsh towards them. Jim Crow laws really affected almost everything, blacks and whites had separate stairwells, doors, bathrooms and even windows. African Americans frequented different doors and rooms than white men in the workplace. Blacks were prohibited from entering white areas of workplaces and looking out windows at whites. Thanks to Jim Crow laws, blacks were very much in the news during World War II. African Americans were greatly influenced by laws in the 20th century. It is good that the Jim Crow laws were stopped because blacks suffered greatly. The laws of 1900 were terrible, as were the people who actually wanted to discriminate against blacks. Jim Crow laws were very harsh, but they were condemned in the 1960s. Today, Jim Crow laws are long gone and African Americans are very happy. Jim Crow laws arose in a variety of different forms. They truly kept blacks “in their place.” It wasn't until nearly 90 years after they went into effect that the laws ended. Jim Crow laws had a long and prosperous history, but it would not last. Bottom line, Jim Crow laws were bad, and it was great that they ended in 1964. People got used to African Americans having all the same rights soon after Jim Crow laws ended..
