When people think of the 1920s they think of the Great Depression. What people don't know is that the 1920s were much more than just the Depression. The 1920s were one of America's most prosperous eras. This era brought peace, new technologies, inventions, new dances, flappers, entertainment, prohibition, and much more. The 1920s have been described in many ways, including the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, and the Age of Wonderful Nonsense. The name that best illustrates this period is the era of wonderful nonsense due to crazy fashions. The 1920s were a time of excitement, the First World War had just ended and it was difficult for everyone to calm down. After being away from home for so long, coming back and getting back to my usual routine seemed too peaceful. Young women and men laid the foundation for an unforgettable party era, full of new and exciting experiences. Some of these new ideas lasted and others and still others were just fads that faded or became less popular. A fad is a trend that goes poplar for a short period of time. The era of wonderful nonsense was full of fads. There are fads in almost everything and some fads you would never believe. The fashions of the 1920s were unpredictable. Some were normal but others were scandalous and unusual. People have become very involved in fads and some have even taken up hobbies. There were style fads, dace fads, game fads, and casual fads. Before World War I the women were called Gibson Girls. Gibson girls were the complete opposite of woman in 1920. Gibson girls had long, loose hair. They wore long skirts and high collars and did not date (Jennifer Rosenberg, p.1). The Gibson girls were considered the ideal woman, but after the First World War, times changed. Women were at the center of the paper in an unforgettable era. It was a period of “extraordinary vitality, invention and social change” (George E.Mowry 1963 p1). “The Roaring '20s were a time when young adults seemed to have a curiosity about life and a defiance of death that made their elders shake their heads. This was an era in which people tested the limits of human pain and endurance” (Cincinnati post 1997). Young people embraced “the wild, the new, and the forbidden” (Sara and Tom Pendergast, 1990). The Roaring Twenties were full of great inventions, jazz and fads. Everyone could find interest in the twenties especially for passing fashions. Every fashion made this decade one of a kind. Without passing fads this era would not have had the impact it has had on American history. This was a wonderful time in American history, but it was also short-lived and the Great Depression and World War I were just upon us and soon to come..
