Topic > Security: Physical Access Controls - 757

1. Walls, fences and gates: the oldest but one of the most reliable methods of preventing unauthorized people from accessing resources. NWU has two main gates at the entrance to the university. To access the gate you must have your student card. There are roller gates at the IT facilities on the top floor where a student must swipe their student ID to gain access. The NWU also has walls and fences around the campus. This is extremely important to keep unauthorized users out of the university and plays an important role in improving security.2. Guards: Unlike walls and fences which are static, guards can analyze different situations and act accordingly. At the main entrance of the university there is always a guard at the gate. If a student forgets his or her student ID, the guard can identify the individual and whether or not to open the gate. However this system can be improved: sometimes the guards open the gate too easily and sometimes they do not always check the trunk of the car upon exit (there may be a stolen computer inside the trunk). This is important to ensure that unauthorized people stay out of the university and that no assets are stolen, such as a computer. This certainly helps improve overall safety.3. ID cards and badges: IDs are normally hidden where a badge features a name and picture. These can serve many purposes but in the case of university they serve as a key card. The university uses a badge system and they are called student cards. Student cards have each student's first name, last name and student number printed on the front of the card. The card also contains an RFID tag which acts as a key for entry to the gates. They are very safe but can be... middle of paper... private users outside the facilities. Not many improvements can be made to the walls. Controls not present that can be taken into consideration1. Dogs: Guard dogs are sometimes used to guard valuable resources due to their keen sense of smell. For a university, dogs are probably not the best way to improve security. There are too many people moving around throughout the day. Maybe it will improve safety at night. Money spent on guard dogs is better spent elsewhere to improve security.2. Man Traps: Can be defined as a small enclosure with separate entry and exit points. The university has a kind of trap system with roller gates and lobby, but not completely (because the entrance and exit are the same gate). A trap system can be easily implemented with almost no effort, but I don't think it will work well enough for a university facility.
