In the story “Hills Like White Elephants” the author approaches the conflict from a third person point of view and is very frank about what the conflict is. The reason I think it's very blunt is because the couple discusses throughout the story whether to have an operation or not. In the story "The Things They Carried" the author speaks from the first person point of view and addresses the conflict between individual and self throughout the story in many different ways, but also speaks from a third person point of view to gain a different perspective on the war. I think the author also speaks from the third person point of view to distance himself from the internal conflict that runs through him. I think both of these stories use very different literary techniques to resolve their conflict. In “Hills Like White Elephants” the author is very blunt about what the conflict is using literary techniques such as conflict. This allows the reader to easily understand what conflict is occurring within the story. In “The Things They Carried” the author uses many metaphors and other literary techniques that may try to confuse the reader as to what the real internal conflict is.
