The question here is why poor sector in Pakistan is not affected by obesity? First, the most important factor is the reduction in salary. The poor sector of Pakistan does not get good wages as the minimum wage is much lower and those who do forced labor do not earn much, which results in a poor standard of living. Furthermore, they do not earn much and their standard of living is much lower than that of poor Westerners. This lower wage level does not allow them to buy expensive junk food as fast food in Pakistan is not affordable for the poor community. Likewise, takeaways and fast food outlets do not offer cheap junk food as fast food in Pakistan is expensive and is out of reach of poor communities who rely on lower wages. Secondly, another main factor is that the eating habits of the poor sector of Pakistan are totally different from the poor sector of the West. Most poor people don't like to eat junk foods like pizza, burgers, etc. as the eating habits are totally different and junk food is not popular among the poor population. Furthermore, compared to Western countries, in Pakistan only 22% of men and 37% of women are obese (National Center for Biotechnology, 2002), which is much lower than in the United Kingdom, where the obesity rate is 67% for men and 57% for women. (The Guardian, 2014). There are some more important factors that do not allow the poor population of Pakistan to become obese, for example, extreme weather conditions and manual labor. Mostly, for the poor community of Pakistan, labor work is their only bread and butter and to earn it they need to do hard labor in harsh weather conditions.
