Battle for Canada and the Great Lakes1. British forces were weaker in Canada.2. Three invasion attempts (Detroit, Niagra and Lake Champlain) repelled once they crossed into Canada3. The British and Canadians took advantage of the upper Great Lakes by capturing the American Fort Michilimackinac led by Isaac Brock, assisted by "General Mud" and "General Confusion". The invasion began again in 1813 when the Americans had a much more advanced navy than the British, ships equipped with heavy firepower, thicker walls, larger crews made up mostly of free blacks. The British were defeated by General Harrison's army at the Battle of the Thames in October 1813, allowing the Americans to gain control of the Great Lakes.6. By the end of 1814, the Americans were defending their territory from the British, with an attack on New York using the Lake River route. The American fleet led by Thomas Macdonough led America to victory and drove the English from the New England area.B. Attack on the nation's capital and defense of New Orleans1. An attack on Washington in 1814 led to the British burning the capital and the White House, in which Francis Scott Key observed and wrote "The Star Spangled Banner." Another attack was aimed at New Orleans in 1814, where Andrew Jackson was held in command.3. January 8, 1815 marked the beginning of the Battle of New Orleans. The British were badly defeated due to inadequate tactics. The victory led to nationalism among the people of the United States4. The British retaliated by blocking...... half the paper...... Jackson took advantage. President Monroe, alarmed by Jackson's actions, initiated the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1819 (Adams-Onis Treaty). Spain renounced Florida and Oregon claims.B. The Monroe Doctrine1. The Monroe Doctrine born in 1823 which consisted of two fundamental characteristics, non-colonization and non-intervention.2. Directed against Russia due to colonization efforts by establishing trading posts in California, meaning other nations would not be able to acquire/seize more lands in the Americas.3. Non-intervention was aimed at Europe to keep its own system of government away from it. Aiming mainly towards the southern regions where the Spanish American republics fled.4. The Monroe Doctrine didn't mean much. He was achieved to protect the neighbors of the newly formed republic, but in reality he was only concerned with the defense of the nation.
