Many ships in the sea belt of Ithacaca, old and new. I will examine them, choose the best in sight, we will arm it and launch it into the sea immediately! (3. 322-329) By giving Telemachus a specific task to complete, Athena is lessening the stress Telemachus has about his journey. This is also done by Athena who assigns herself the most difficult tasks to complete, choosing a crew and a ship. The act that gives Telemachus the greatest feeling of support is that Athena will sail with Telemachus, which will prove useful later in the journey. Given these points, Athena (as Mentor) serves as a mentor and advisor to Telemachus. It is able to significantly boost his confidence, prepare him for the journey to find his father, and make him feel worthy of being his father's son. In real life, many people experience a relationship similar to this, someone who gives them advice and has a positive influence and guidance in their life. This relationship is fundamental to Telemachus and his growth from an immature child to a man, and also proves to be an important relationship to have in one's life.
