This essay will discuss creativity in the creative industries and the creative economy. Creativity is the new word and the new value in economics. A class of creatives is replacing white and blue collar workers, changing the way the world has defined society for the past few centuries. Creative industries can flourish in densely populated areas where multiple and continuous connections between creative people are possible. Although governments are trying to introduce the teaching of creativity into the education system to foster the growth of the creative economy, creativity is sometimes suppressed due to the high risk of investment required by the creative industries. According to Teresa Amabile, the main definition of creativity is “the production of new and useful ideas in any field”. In fact, a creative idea must be different from other existing ideas to be considered creative. Other theorists believe that a creative idea must also be exclusive. Furthermore, this idea must have adequate content and achieve an objective. Heunks states that creativity is “divergent thinking to conceive new ideas.” However, John Howkins, in his book Creative Economy: How People Make Money from Ideas, gives a different definition and states that creativity consists of taking an idea from someone or somewhere and, giving it a personal imprint, using this idea to create a new idea. 1. Furthermore, Howkins argues that creativity is crucial to the new economy. Neither the concept of creativity nor that of economics is new, but the relationship between them is. This relationship, and how it links these two main concepts, is the key to creating special value and wealth. Howkins uses the term creative economy to identify this phenomenon...... middle of paper ......example is the video game industry which is producing a huge amount of sequels and reboots of best-selling titles, along with other titles based on box office films. As a result, the video game industry is losing its main characteristic as an innovative leader in the creative field and is struggling to conceive ideas capable of producing innovative content.
