Topic > Case Study on Eating Habits of Students - 2721

The younger generation is now quite sensitive to issues regarding their physical characteristics. Issues such as body weight have been a cause for serious concern. School administrators worry that students may neglect their health; a survey is then carried out on common eating habits. Using the case study paradigm; This quantitative study focuses on understanding the factors that influence students' eating habits. A total of 207 students from a technical vocational university in Taiwan participated in the study. The survey includes common eating habits; more specifically on the types and frequency of food consumed by students. The Big Five Personality Scale is also administered to further understand the factors that influence students' eating habits. The results show that students' eating habits are influenced by various basic demographics, such as gender, grade level, study session and personality. More importantly, the results also show that applied foreign language students scored the highest in personality trait openness. Further additional implications on the Big Five personality are also provided. In summary, the present study offers the opportunity to open explanatory discussions; maybe not entirely, but partly because students behave the way they do today.1. IntroductionIn recent years the general public appreciates the external appearance more and more every day. As we read on the news, the number of people undergoing plastic surgery is at an all-time high. Beauty products have seen better sales, even during these difficult economic times [1]. It seems like people care more about their appearance than their budget. In an educational context, many have wondered why students...... middle of paper...... means that when the frequency of eating sweets increases, Conscientiousness decreases.5. ConclusionThe present study exemplifies the use of the Big Five Personality scale to understand the eating habits of EFL learners. This case study, although limited to the sample from a science and technology university, shows that students are more oriented towards healthy lifestyles. As shown by the results, the frequency with which breakfast is eaten is quite high (five times a week). Furthermore, the most Conscientious students abstain from eating desserts (sweets). While eating out depends a lot on their working status. In summary, individuals' eating habits would be very tied to their basic demographics. Therefore, it is recommended that students know the consequences of good and bad eating habits; because in the end, you are what and how you eat.
