The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1925. It is a romantic novel between many different characters that you know in the novel. It's like a big circle of love. Daisy Buchannan is married to Tom Buchannan but before their marriage Daisy was in love with a man named Jay Gatsby. Gatsby had to go and fight in the war and Daisy never heard or saw Gatsby again. Only on the day of her wedding did Gatsby write her a letter explaining why he couldn't see her and that he would return home, but unfortunately it was already too late. Daisy was about to marry Tom Buchannan and no one could stop it. Daisy is now married and does not want to marry her and later finds out that Tom has a mistress in town. Another side of the novel concerns the narrator Nick Carraway. Nick is Daisy's first cousin and they grew up together. Nick knows Tom from Yale: they both graduated the same year. Nick has moved from the West to West Egg to start over and soon discovers that he is neighbors with the Great Gatsby himself. Deep in the novel Nick and Gatsby get to know each other and become good friends. Gatsby lets Nick know that he and his cousin Daisy have a past and that he would like to make plans to see her, but he doesn't want Daisy to know that she will see him. Nick is told to ask Daisy for tea and Gatsby happens to drop by. This plan is fully put into action and Daisy and Gatsby meet again. In this novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald relied heavily on symbolism to tell the story. There are many examples of symbolism throughout the novel. An example of symbolism is a new beginning. This symbol means that you are essentially given a free pass in life to start over and reinvent your life. This symbol is important to the story because... in the center of the paper... there are two roles in the period in which this novel is set. It shows that if you weren't someone who had money you were nobody. This symbol is used practically throughout the novel showing the difference between East and West Egg, New York City and The Valley of Ashes. Symbolism is the use of symbols to indicate ideas and qualities giving those meanings other than their literal sense. Symbolism can take different forms, generally it is an object that represents something that gives a completely different meaning, much deeper and more significant. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the symbolism of The Great Gatsby to show the true identity of his characters. It also gives more meaning to things that would be seen as ordinary objects throughout the novel. There are many other symbols used in The Great Gatsby, in fact there may be too many to list.
