I felt out of place and thought, "Why did he bring me to this meeting?" I felt disheveled and was looking for an excuse to leave the meeting. But I realized that a lot of my reaction was based on culture shock because I was in a room with people who looked different from me and had big titles. The turning point for me was when people came to me and started telling me their ideas and thoughts. For the remainder of the meeting I began building social connections, networks, and “social capital” support associated with domestic violence awareness and education
