The aim was to destroy the incorrect representation of the role of women in society and the idea that this role implied that women were inferior to men . He conveyed his message throughout the story through his strategic use of motifs, imagery, and symbolism. Although John constantly ignored the narrator as men do women and insisted that his knowledge was the best, the narrator did not allow this to stop her from writing and imagining and, ultimately, freed herself from society's pattern. When John catches her losing the wallpaper, he faints and falls to the floor, and even though he is passed out, the narrator exclaims, “I had to crawl all over him every time” (Gilman 803). This last line explains how, even when it seems like men have given up and don't look down on women, they are still in the situation
