Being deprived of freedom and living under constant whippings and starvation is something none of us would want to experience and should never exist, unfortunately, it happened at the same time time. Men who call themselves defenders of liberty and support the Constitution but enjoy slavery are nothing but mere hypocrites. Furthermore, many slaves were illiterate and poor. Their owners will do everything to prevent their slaves from reading and writing. As Douglas once heard his teacher say: If I taught that nigger to read, there would be no keeping him. He would be forever unfit to be a slave. It would immediately become unmanageable and of no value to its owner. As for him, it would make him discontented and unhappy. (Gates 338) In other words, slave owners feared that once slaves knew how to read, they would fight and prosecute for their freedom. A literate slave will question the slave owners of his captivity and the unjustification of slavery. This would make the slave owners question themselves and it would be very difficult for them to sleep at night. Because they know that what their slaves said was right. Furthermore, slave owners prevented their slaves from seeking freedom by letting their slaves see the negative side of it.
