Imagine war on the streets of Los Angeles, with people shooting in open-air schoolyards and shop windows. The fighting caused deaths in all the suburbs. Riots break out and people break windows. This violence has been part of Los Angeles' history since the 1980s during the Blood and Crip shootings. Members of both were disenfranchised African Americans, who had been subjected to discrimination and segregation for centuries. As painful as the shootings were, they pale in comparison to the warfare dominance that the Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13 gang continues to have internationally today. Through fear, exploitation, and masses of unmatched members, MS-13 became overnight one of the richest clandestine drug trafficking industries in the world. MS-13 is unique as a long-distance gang due to its Latin origins and the extent of its boundaries. The mentality of this organization is “for the gang” and “para libertad”, since the members came to the country to seek freedom from the guerrillas in El Salvador. When they decide to be free in our society, they remain chained to us, in a variety of vindictive ways. The Salvadoran gang and its leader represent America's failures, insecurities, and the most negatively stereotyped parts of our society because it is spread across 42 states.
