College is a black hole, swallowing hundreds of thousands of dollars, hours of life and dreams, then spitting out a scared, inexperienced little human being. It does so at ridiculously high costs, wasting time and money and, through large investments, killing the dreams of countless young people. This Human will enter college debt-free, and then leave on average with “$25,250” (Student Debt) worth of debt. To put college debt in perspective, you could buy a 2013 Chevrolet Spark for just “$13,785” (2012 Chevrolet). So he will have the debt of someone who bought two new cars even before embarking on his professional career. Although for the poorest or for people studying a master's or doctoral degree in the United States this number would be significantly higher due to college costs exceeding $20,000 per year. He will also work countless hours on courses that have no application in his life. chosen specialization, such as the mathematics requirements for an English major or a literature course for an engineer. Or less obvious classes like algebra for which “the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce predicts that over the next decade only 5% of entry-level workers will need to be proficient in algebra or better.” (Hacker, Andrew). these pointless lessons are an expensive tradition imposed on students for no real reason other than to provide them with a “well-rounded” education. This may have been the purpose of college in the 1950s, but now it's just another obstacle to a high-paying career that is the primary reason students go to college no quote needed. Some people will remind him that if his dream is not to specialize in a fiscally responsible thing to study such as philosophy, literature, or education, he will fall into a pit of indebted debt... middle of paper...
