On November 2, 1872, Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly published an article reporting that a prominent and well-known minister, Henry Ward Beecher, was having an extramarital affair with Elizabeth Tilton, the wife of a wellman Beecher's well-known editor and assistant, Theodore Tilton. Both Tiltons were members of Beecher's congregation. Victoria Woodhull, a free love advocate and supporter of women's suffrage, implies in her article that Beecher, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn and a proponent of strong moral values, did not practice what he preached and committed adultery, which he advised against by pulpit. Mrs Tilton is believed to have confessed the affair to her husband in 1870 and later recanted her confession under pressure from Beecher and Mr Tilton.
