IntroductionIn Multiply, Chan presents a proposal for the 21st century church in support of Christian discipleship. The author believes that many have strayed from the mandates of the New Testament church by failing to make disciples and disciples. Furthermore, defining a disciple as: “a student or apprentice. [16]” Aligning his presentation with the Inspired Holy Scripture of Jesus' teaching, training and guidance of his disciples. Encouraging Christians to return to their roots by becoming disciples, and then becoming disciples; in other words, multiply. Chan goes on to admonish the church to value their Christian service as ministers over leaving the ministry to the pastor. This is followed by an overview of the importance of biblical study for the Christian life and a summary of the Old and New Testaments. Written in a manner conducive to group study, this book may well be of use to individuals as well. In Multiply, Chan challenges every believer to become a disciple of Christ and a disciple maker; thereby, fulfilling the mandates of the Great Commission and Command (Matthew 28:19-20). Summary Multiply is written so that every Christian can understand and embrace Christ's discipleship mandate. Challenging each of us to read the Holy Scriptures, to willingly submit to God's will for us, to “go” and compel others to become followers of Christ. Consisting of five parts, each aimed at inspiring Christians to become disciples, it provides biblical guides for righteous living, Bible readers, and Christ multipliers. Part One, consisting of three chapters, discusses what a disciple is, living as a disciple, and the church as a disciple-making foundation. The beginning of this chapter invites the reader to consider discipleship at the heart of the paper as disciple makers. The process of change begins with the individual and extends through the local church until the universal church becomes disciple-maker. Adhering to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), Christ commanded believers to go and compel others throughout the world; twenty-first century churches have drifted apart. Each of the five sections provides actions for believers to reverse current trends and willingly submit to God's plan for his children and teach unbelievers how to become disciples of Christ. Questions are included for introspection or group discussion to open your eyes to the Scriptures rather than be self-reliant. It is a great resource for Christians to use for ministry, growth, and personal spiritual development. An additional resource from which teachers, preachers and lay people can learn and grow.
