The misogynistic confinement yellow wallpaper depicts a young woman's nervous breakdown and is an example and protest of the gender-based patriarchal treatments of mental illnesses they were subjected to subjected nineteenth-century women. The narrator begins the story by telling how she hypothesizes that there may be something wrong with the villa where they will live for three months. According to her, the rent price was too low and even went so far as to describe it as “strange”. However, she is immediately mocked and rejected by her husband who, as she says, "is extremely practical". As the story continues, the reader learns that her husband John thinks the narrator is ill, but she is not as convinced as he is. Second Until one night she sees a woman crawling behind the pattern tempting her to go and see if the wallpaper is actually moving, and that's when her husband catches her. He always seems to treat her like a child, in this particular case calling her "baby." Despite this, he sees this as an opportunity to speak up to make his concerns known by informing him that he is not improving as he so adamantly believes. However, her attempts are futile as he once again dismisses her by putting his supposed medical opinion before his wife's feelings. The story takes a shocking turn when he finally realizes what that figure is: a woman. As the story progresses, he believes that the only reason for his recovery is the wallpaper. He doesn't say anything to anyone because he anticipates they might be disbelieving and he once again feels the need to repress his thoughts and feelings. On the last night of their stay, she is determined to free the woman trapped behind bars. He begins to tear strips of wallpaper and continues throughout the night until morning, meters of paper are torn away. His sister-in-law Jennie offers to help but at this point the narrator is territorially protective of the wallpaper. She locks herself in the room and is determined to expose the wall. As he is tearing off the wallpaper, he sees strangled heads in the drawing screaming as the wallpaper is being torn off. At this point, she is furious and even
