If we think back to the 1990s, businesses used newspapers, television and radio as means of advertising. We've come a long way since then; Now businesses can ask their consumers to "Like" their pages and "Share" the page among their friends and family. Today social media is the highlight of everyone's life and we can all thank Mark Zuckerberg for creating a network of 1.2 billion potential friends, Facebook. Facebook is an online social media platform. And since this article is about the social media platform, it's best to clarify what the word actually means. Think about old media, such as newspapers and television. We can read an article in a newspaper or listen to it on television, but in reality it is a one-way street, where you cannot express your thoughts about it. On the other hand, social media not only gives you information but also gives you the power to communicate your thoughts. This is an exciting time to be a young person in this era. With the advent of mobile phones and the growth of social media platforms, not only is it much easier for young people to access media more easily and quickly, but it is also much easier to create or acquire content and share it. If you think about the youth of this era, the music they listen to or the clothes they wear or the way they talk; there's a very good chance he or she got it from Facebook. From the outside it might seem like social media is just about kids updating their status or tweeting at each other, but it's actually so much more than that. Everyone is aware of each other's social activities and this has brought dramatic changes in our lifestyle. Because we are so tied to these intricate social media sites… middle of the paper… nationally and internationally it is now a new phenomenon. The 2013 Shahbag protests are a great example of this. This protest started from a single event on Facebook, called “Protest against the sentence given to Quader Mulla”. From that, it grew exponentially and is now considered a milestone in our nation's history. From the above example we can see how social media activism can easily influence thousands of young minds. Today's youth have the opportunity to use media in ways they could never have imagined 15 or 20 years ago. We now have the tool to use social media safely, to analytically examine the messages sent to us from various sources, and learn to build and share our skills, thoughts and knowledge on our own terms. With this new knowledge and new tools, we have a vast open world to discover, learn and share.
