The "Jazz Age" was a period in American history rich in history and literature, and no one defined it better than F. Scott Fitzgerald. In fact, Fitzgerald was the first to coin the term in 1922 in his book “The Great Gatsby” (USC np). Fitzgerald stated that the 1920s “… was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire" (Bruccoli np) Fitzgerald, according to many scholars, defined the 1920s and 1930s Americans, and offers a unique perspective on that time period that was so new to the minds of Americans of the time. Those in his novels and short stories like that of "Winter Dreams" are full of this kind of unruly attitude never seen before. by men and women before the 1920s and 1930s. But Fitzgerald's unique writing style and purpose was not an accident, and was the result of many events occurred during his rather short life One of the ways in which F. Scott Fitzgerald became who he was through his heavy drinking. Although he only wrote when he was sober, much of his time during the latter part of his life was spent behind the bottle (Bruccoli np) When Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood in the 1930s after his wife Zelda's emotional breakdown, he really started drinking and quickly became famous for it (Bruccoli np) Many of the characters in his short stories and novels lived a Bacchic lifestyle, such as Jay Gatsby de “The Great Gatsby” (USC np) Fitzgerald lived a life of moderate wealth, but went through wealth faster than he could earn it (Bruccoli np) This lifestyle that Fitzgerald lived is exactly like his writing style and most likely has contributed to the attitude of the stories. The short story “Winter Dreams” beautifully defined Fitzgerald's writing style. The cri...... middle of paper ......the most famous writers of all time (Bruccoli np) The man who coined the term “Jazz Age”, in doing so, defined an entire era of American history (USC np) Fitzgerald puts it simply this way: "it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire" (Bruccoli np)Works CitedBaremore, Annaleigh. “An Analysis of F.
