Throughout history, sports have served as a respite for countries at war. For example, during the 9th century BC, ancient Greece “temporarily halted warfare between the city-states of the Peloponnese during the celebration of the Olympic Games.” During World War I, the sport also initiated the Christmas Truce of 1914, in which German and English troops temporarily declared a truce, exchanged Christmas presents and played football. According to Cardenas, these human moments show the potential of using sport as a bridge between contrasting ideologies and cultures.
