At the beginning of the 19th century, the form of anti-Semitism becomes more serious. Germany appears to isolate and eliminate the Jews. When the Nazi Party, led by Adolf Hitler, comes to power in Germany in 1933, it wants to create the perfect Nazi state. The Nazis want to eliminate any opposition to their rule, so they set up a system of camps, e.g. concentration camps, extermination camps to detain people they consider “undesirable”. Many of those “undesirable” people are Jews. From 1933 to 1945, approximately six million Jews were murdered and it was called the Holocaust. The Holocaust is the largest case of mass murder in history and is difficult to ignore. After World War II, Holocaust survivors directly tell their stories or write about what happens during the Holocaust. One of the most numerous writings is Night by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. This work is based on his experience with his father Chlomo in the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald between 1944 and 1945. Another effective book is Fugitive Pieces by Canadian poet Anne Michaels, which won the Orange Prize and the Books in Canada First Novel Award. As a boy during the Holocaust in Poland, Jakob Beer is seven years old, his parents are murdered by Nazi soldiers and his sister Bella is kidnapped. Jakob escapes and is saved by the Greek geologist Athos Roussos. Athos successfully hides Jakob in Greek, then, at the end of the war, in Toronto. The experiences of both characters, Elie and Jakob, reflect a truth: no matter how tough the situation, one tends to overcome all obstacles to achieve a fulfilling life. Courage can be acquired by love, faith, and the intention to survive… middle of paper… run back for something forgotten, a moment that saves you from an accident or causes one” (Michaels 22 ) Ahos helps Jakob cool down and enter the world. To summarize, World War II is the most destructive human undertaking in history. Battles are fought on every continent and involve more than sixty countries, affecting approximately three-quarters of the population world. Six million Jews are murdered by the Nazis among all civilians in Europe for extermination. The memory of the Holocaust has made the world more sensitive to genocide. The Holocaust has a particular impact on the Jewish people, who vowed not to allow something like this to ever happen again. The Night and Fugitive Pieces are two impressive books that show readers a fact of the Holocaust and tell the world that the situation is even worse, the love of families and friends, faith and intention to live can insure them alive..
