At the end of the story, he gets his children back and so much more. The stepmother dies after her evil actions towards Hansel and Grethel. The stepmother feels no remorse for trying to leave Hansel and Grethel in the forest. Instead, the stepmother continues to encourage Hansel and Grethel's father to take them with him even after they find their way home. At the end of the story, the stepmother dies. For a children's story, death is a little too extreme. When Hansel and Grethel reach the house made of bread, they realize that the owner is a witch whose goal is to lure and eat them.
