The United States Post Office began in 1775, with the intention of connecting across the nation and allowing every American access to a mail delivery service at affordable prices. (S1) Over the years there have been many changes in the way people communicate. Gone are the days when the only way to send a written message was through the post. Technology has given us many new ways to stay in touch with each other through email, text messages, and even instant messages. Unfortunately, for the U.S. Postal Service, these advances, which have little to no cost, mean a large loss of revenue. The Post Office has not made a profit since 2006, leading many people to wonder whether their services should be privatised. (S2) The United States Postal Service is a “cost-based service,” which means that regardless of whether they make money or not, they must continue to offer their products and services.
