Every human being has natural rights that can never be taken away. In an effort to create a world in which every person is given a fair opportunity to live, in 1948 the United Nations passed a bill called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The document outlines all the rights guaranteed to everyone in the world, despite age, gender, religion etc. Civil liberties including the right to life, liberty and security of the person; the right not to be subject to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family or home; and the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion are incorporated into the Declaration. Despite the positive morality of civil rights being implemented, there have been numerous cases where essential civil liberties have been taken away from innocent people. By taking away the natural rights of other people, offenders gain the desired power and control. In the book 1984, George Orwell presents the idea of what the world would become if all natural rights disappeared. The omnipresent ruler of Oceania, called Big Brother, appropriates all the natural rights of citizens, to obtain unlimited power over everything and everyone. Big Brother dominates the lives of citizens by forcefully executing the idea of "mind over matter" or doublethink to control people's minds, creating innovative technology to control citizens' actions, and controlling and modifying spoken English and the language written to express authority over freedom of thought and speech. The combination of the three methods helps Big Brother create infinite control over the minds and hearts of the citizens of Oceania. In Oceania, the concept of "mind over matter" is the very foundation of government... . half of the paper ……a. Stalin in Russia, Hitler in Germany, and Mussolini in Italy all attempted to create a world in which everything was controlled by a supreme ruler; there were no rights extended to citizens of Oceania. To counter any such attempts to create a dystopia, the world came together and fought in unison, so that natural rights could be returned to citizens and humanity spread. The struggle to create a united and equal civilization is far from over, all over the world these natural rights are being stripped from innocent people, in name or caste, religion, sex and age, to achieve power. George Orwell left an important warning to future generations to stand up against injustice. It is the duty of every individual to ensure that every civil freedom, included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is truly extended to each and everyone. Works Cited 1984 by George Orwell
