Introduction Highly skilled immigration brings different minds and experiences, as well as different points of view, to the country. Therefore, it is not surprising that immigration plays an important role when it comes to innovation. Immigration brings people and ideas together by fostering innovation, and the United States has been the best nation in this field. Since its inception, the United States has attracted all kinds of foreign talent that has contributed to the country's great economic success, most specifically in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). One of the most significant contributors includes John Roebling, who was a German-born bridge architect who created the machine that allowed steel cables to support suspension bridges. Roebling is responsible for many bridge projects such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge. Another German immigrant who contributed greatly to the success of the United States is the famous Albert Einstein. His many discoveries and inventions further knowledge and understanding of the universe, as well as his role in the development of the atomic bomb, which helped end the war when it was used against Japan in 1945. Many other foreign scientists and scientists engineers have played an important role in the early improvements in the standard of living of American families and, as you will read later, continue to contribute to modern advances. Challenges and misconceptions High-skilled immigration has changed dramatically since the days of Roebling and Einstein, and the new challenges pose a threat to innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. The current H-1B visa program has been the subject of substantial debate due to its inability to accommodate d...... middle of paper ......d immigrants who could be the next Albert Einstein, John Roebling or Sergei Brin. It is clear that highly skilled immigrants make significant contributions to the STEM field where they dominate patent approvals and have obtained higher education in areas where Americans are currently lacking. STEM job growth over the next four years will outpace the creation of STEM workers, which will create a shortage that can severely hamper the economy. More light should be shed on the issue of high-skilled immigration and allowed to be separated from low-skilled illegal immigration. Voters have the power to move politicians and advance appropriate immigration reform so that the United States can capitalize on the diversity of the nation's talented human capital and the positive impact they have on innovation, entrepreneurship, and growth economical.
