One reason is the prevalence of the problem in question in today's society. Over the past five years, racial tensions have quickly moved to the forefront of social issues in the United States. Recent incidents involving police violence against Black Americans have left a schism in trust between the Black community and the police force, which subsequently leads to strong distrust in the criminal justice system as well. All of this culminates in the publication achieving a higher level of accessibility due to its relevance in current social affairs. As many Americans turn on the television and hear about the plethora of questionable police shootings of Black Americans, some go further in an attempt to expand their knowledge on the topic. This leads to a surge of readers interested in learning more about social injustice in America, allowing Alexander's piece to receive more of a spotlight. Another reason for his need is his prejudice towards the issue. Michelle Alexander is a Black-American who previously worked as a racial justice project at the ACLU of Northern California. This comes into effect as Alexander has an innate bias towards discrimination against black Americans.
