From the 1980s to the 1990s, the people of the United States faced economic decline and the transformation of the nation. People followed President Reagan's conservatism, hoping that Reagan could successfully recover the economy and solve some problems related to the economy, such as homelessness, poverty, budget deficit, and inequality.[ James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 940.] But Reagan did not totally solve these problems: the popular movement reflected the existence of inequality. To achieve globalization, an information-centered American economy, American leaders wanted to transform the nation. In the process of transformation, the decrease in manufacturing activity caused job losses, so many people found more than one job and worked for longer hours. Gradually, the rich became richer and richer, while the poor became poorer and poorer. Inequality appeared again. Over the decades, different groups of people such as African Americans have experienced inequality, women have encountered injustice, and homosexuals have faced discrimination and tried to change their situation by giving civil rights movement. And their movement has greatly influenced people since they fought for their rights. African Americans suffered from racial inequality, but they fought for justice and brought about effects. Conservatives were concerned about promoting racial equality. President Reagan even opposed the creation of a national holiday to mark Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday,[James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 932.] who once gave a wonderful anti-war speech in New York City, calling on the people against the war and to bring about social justice. In fact, King'... halfway through the document... does not rigorously single out non-homosexuals;[ James Oakes, et al. Of The People: A History Of The United States (Oxford University Press, 2011), 960.] some gays enter into same-sex marriages, living equally and happily. In conclusion, conservatism limits the equality and other rights of some groups of people such as African Americans, women, and homosexuals. In the 1980s, many conservatives seemed to succeed because they achieved their goal: protecting the economy and the American people from economic decline. In the 1990s, Americans wanted to achieve globalization, transform the nation, but inequality returned. In reality, the civil rights movement from the 1980s to the 1990s changed people positively. Black people enjoy equality; women courageously do things that men can do; homosexuals pursue the happiness they truly desire. These are all precious legacies left by the civil rights movement.
