According to Winston, Bentham believed that the pleasure of others should not only be considered in every human decision but also in political ones. Winston stated of Bentham that: "He thought that every political decision should be made on the same calculation, that is, to maximize the net product of pleasure over pain." (Winston). Political decisions should be calculated, ensuring that the outcome is more pleasant than painful for others. Bentham's political idea is linked to the acceptance of Beowulf as king of the Geats. The husband of Hygd, king of the Geats, died; according to Anglo-Saxon tradition the son should be king. Hygd realizes that his son is too young and does not have the experience to be king, so he offers the throne to Beowulf. Beowulf accepts Hygd's offer to become king of the Geats because he knows that it is the best decision for the Geats that will bring them pleasure and reduce the pain of suffering. Beowulf's decision to accept being king brought the best to the Geats because he ruled them as any wise king would. In Beowulf it is stated that “He ruled the land well for fifty winters, and grew old and became wise as a guardian of the land…” (2208-22009).
