Romeo and Juliet – Text vs. FilmThe tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" was originally a play created by William Shakespeare, one of many world-famous works of the same. This play has been reworked into the intended style many times in the past, the first version in 1968 was directed by Franco Zeffirelli, the last film in 1996 by Baz Luhrmann. The latter is quite modern and only occasionally uses Shakespeare's words. In contrast, the previous version was very traditional and almost completely faithful to the original script. In this essay I will compare the modern film with the traditional version of the tragic opera “Romeo and Juliet”. Among the main differences are those in the various characters and the way they are represented in the two separate editions of the tragedy. An example is Romeo, as he is portrayed as a serious young man who feels very lovesick due to his love for Rosaline, and later, Juliet, in the most faithful version.
