Topic > The significance of technology depicted in Bradbury's book...

Ray Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451, is set in a futuristic era where technology rules our daily lives and books are seen as a bad thing because they stimulate free thinking. While today's technological advances have not reached the level of Bradbury's F451, there is a real danger that society will end up relying on technology at the expense of intellectual development. Fahrenheit 451 is set in a futuristic time period and is set in a large American city on the east coast. The futuristic world described by Bradbury is chilling, a future in which all known books are burned by so-called "firemen". Our main character in Fahrenheit 451 is a firefighter known as Guy Montag, he has the visual characteristics of the average firefighter, he is tall and dark, but there is one thing that distinguishes him from the rest of his colleagues. He secretly loves books. One night, while walking home from work, Montag meets an unusual young girl named Clarisse McClellan. She's different from most people, she's idealistic and hates what being social has turned into. He tells Montag about a society where firefighters once used to put out accidental fires and not start them like they do now. Montag thinks this is nonsense, the chief reassured him that firefighters always started fires, it's even in the rules. Clarisse continues to tell him about her uncle, who remembers things from the past. He tells Montag about his family and how they stay up all night talking about a variety of different things. Montag thinks this is very strange, why would anyone want to waste their time staying up talking? Montag finds himself starting to be fascinated by Clarisse and her eccentric ideas. He hopes that when he leaves work... in the middle of paper... not books. Montag realizes that he now belongs to the group that continues the never-ending battle against society. An important thing to note in Bradbury's writings is that although we may have technological advancements in today's society, for better or worse, we cannot forget the important things in life. Mildred in this story represents a mindless drone that technology has gotten the better of. Its role indicates that technology can cause the loss of personal interactions between people. We must not forget that without original ways of doing some things, there may be no way to advance. Loss of personal interaction can cause lack of advancement due to lack of knowledge, so we must mix the old with the new. This way we, as a society, will not rely too much on the dependency of technology in modern and future times.
