Topic > The transformation of Bilbo Baggins depicted in The...

Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. At first he is a small, peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order and hates disorganized things. “Please be careful” and “Please don't bother. I can do it” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard named Gandalf arrives and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo refuses his offer, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They eat together and sleep at Bilbo's house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the act itself he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. At the end of the story he is rounded, dynamic, important, and still the protagonist. At the end of the story, Bilbo is a changed Hobbit. The first scene where Bilbo begins to change is in chapter two, Roast Mutton. He is sent to check a light probably caused by a fire and to report whether it is safe. Then he goes to the site and sees three figures. He understands that they are Trolls! They are roasting mutton on the fire. Bilbo then sees a wallet. The wallet is huge. Bilbo thinks the dwarves would be so proud if he pickpocketed him. Then, he walked over and took it. The Trolls then notice this and then get angry. Then Gandalf and the dwarves come to the rescue. He managed to get the wallet, but was almost killed for it. Another chapter where Bilbo changes is chapter five, Riddles In the Dark. Bilbo and the dwarves are in a cave being chased by goblins. Dori carries Bilbo as his legs are too short to run. Then Dori trips and starts running again, leaving Bilbo behind. Bilbo rolls away and hits his head on a rock, he is now unconscious...... middle of paper......, but does not reveal his name. He has a very detailed conversation with Smaug. “Old fool! Because there's a big spot in the hollow of her left breast, naked as a snail out of its shell! (Tolkein, 227) This shows that Bilbo's character really changes because he is insulting Smaug, but under his breath. After the conversation, Bilbo returns to the dwarves and tells them everything. This is a very brave thing for Bilbo to do. All in all, Bilbo changed a lot in The Hobbit. It went from flat, static, main and protagonist to rounded, dynamic, main and protagonist. He changed all the books, but the five biggest chapters were chapters two, five, eight, nine, and twelve. Bilbo was once a very peaceful Hobbit. Now he is a bold and adventurous Hobbit who takes risks. Therefore, Bilbo Baggins is a changed Hobbit at the end of the story.
