The healthcare industry includes doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, administrative workers, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, dentists, therapists, and optometrists, to name a few. The law covers “the use and disclosure of individuals' health information” (U.S. Department of Health, 2012). The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is responsible for “implementing and enforcing privacy legislation with respect to voluntary compliance activities and civil monetary penalties” (U.S. Department of Health, 2012). There are other protections for individuals regarding the healthcare industry, such as the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) Code of Ethics, the American Medical Association (AMA) Code of Medical Ethics for Physicians, the American Ethical Principles Psychological Association (APA) and Code of Conduct for Psychologists and Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
