The Group of Four and the reform of the UN Security CouncilThe primary objective of the Security Council is the maintenance of peace and global security. The Security Council is one of the original six main bodies of the United Nations. According to the United Nations Charter, the functions and powers of the Security Council are a principal body charged with many things, nine of which include “maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations”. 2”Investigate any dispute or situation that could lead to international friction.” 3“Recommend methods for resolving such disputes or terms of resolution.” "Formulate Plans for the Establishment of an Armaments Regulatory System." 5“Determine the existence of a threat to the peace or an act of aggression and recommend actions to be taken.” 6“Invite deputies to apply economic sanctions and other measures that do not involve the use of force to prevent or stop aggression”. 7“Take military action against an aggressor and recommend the admission of new members. 8"Exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in strategic areas". 9“Recommend to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary General and, together with the Assembly, elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice” and many others. The United Nations Security Council is made up of fifteen members. Five permanent members: the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Russia and China have veto power. The remaining ten are non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly from certain regions. Traditionally, non-permanent seats are divided as follows: two to Latin America and the Caribbean, two to Western Europe, two to Asia, three to Af...... middle of paper...... “lesson” and these are basically regional rivals, there are countries like Mexico and Argentina that don't want Brazil to become a permanent member, and Pakistan that doesn't want India to become a permanent member of the Security Council and so on. And finally there is the African bloc, which calls for two permanent members in the Security Council. Ultimately, people who watch the United Nations closely do not believe that these two groups would try to thwart a resolution that would make them permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. So this basically leaves the United States, the big question here is: if the United States is going to seize this nettle and exercise leadership in carrying forward this phase of enlargement, is it in the interest that it would command the power of some of the major established and emerging countries that aren't they? there, only time will tell.
