Language of culture in communication Culture and its worldview reflect and influence language in many ways. The foundation is not necessarily the language a culture speaks, but the way it thinks. The way a particular culture thinks, acts and its perception greatly influences and influences communication. A culture helps to describe a particular situation or experience, it perceives the world in its unique way and this language is the means of communication. Sometimes we have forgotten how different we are and in our world there is an infinite variety of cultures that we interact with every day. There are some crucial skills we need to learn to communicate effectively, as I learned in Communication Tools for Understanding Cultural Differences, by Michelle LeBaron. In order to obtain these skills we must have the basics of communication. We must have strong self-awareness and knowledge of ourselves to be able to communicate well. This is our self-perception or self-image, the way we look at ourselves and the world around us. With this, we have our perception, our lenses of the world, how we interpret information, our feelings, thoughts and our understanding. Consciously and unconsciously, you evaluate whether the thoughts, attitudes, actions, and reactions of others will work for you. (Hybels & Weaver, 2007, p. 35) Without this foundation, we would have no sense of self and would not be able to express anything. Furthermore, we must be familiar with other cultures, their influences, differences and their understandings. You must have cultural mastery otherwise you may have a big misunderstanding or conflict. Cultural fluency means understanding what culture is, how it works, and how culture and community… middle of paper… dualist settings. (LeBaron, 2003 p.6)Every culture has its own way of thinking and communicating, knowing this I believe will help me in my future understanding of other cultural contexts. The tools I have learned are a valuable resource for my foundation in communication and interaction. Furthermore, not only with other cultures, but with people from different backgrounds. I believe that knowing the setting and mindset of an act of communication will help oneself have a better understanding of any interaction situation.
