Topic > What I learned this semester about myself as a writer

I learned a lot about myself as a writer over the course of this semester. This English 101 course has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and my way of thinking. This was my first college writing class and it gave me a lot more freedom in writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we wrote wasn't very important. In high school I wrote essays just to meet the required number of words or pages and to some extent I still feel that way, but maybe that's why I majored in engineering, but in this course I was actually able to express my ideas and for the first time I'm truly testing the limits of my writing abilities. I've really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more into my essays and I think I've developed my own style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite inconsistent and there was a lot of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now I use different tactics like structuring to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I have been able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make overall improvements to my essays. The homework assigned in English 101 was very interesting for me. I think the layout of the course couldn't have been better. There were some tasks that I found interesting. In particular, I found Malcolm Gladwell's article, “Offensive Play,” really interesting. It was relatable to me because I used to play a lot of sports and now I invest a lot of time watching high contact sports like football and it's intriguing to see the "behind the scenes" aspect of the game. Having said that, however, I didn't really enjoy writing the summary of this article. I found it difficult... middle of paper... regardless of what I'm trying to accomplish. I feel like I'm much better at persuading someone through my writing now; which will definitely come in handy in the future. The responsibility I gained during this experience is incredible and has taught me to be a much more organized person. During this semester I was taught a process on how to write an article and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities made me realize that I could definitely take the next step in my academic career. Every new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I'm someone who has never liked English classes in the past and when I signed up for English 101 I just saw it as a requirement to graduate, but I really enjoyed this English class and know it was something I wanted to it was worth it.
