In the play Hamlet, the author, Shakespeare portrays madness or insanity through most of his characters. Madness is a state of mind in which one does not let one's ideas flow normally or think clearly. In this case it is clear that there is something wrong with almost every main character. All the characters in the play in some way or fashion show madness through thoughts, actions or words. Due to the recent death of Hamlet's father, Hamlet is looking for a way out of his problems. While speaking to his new stepfather/old uncle, he makes this statement: “Oh, if even this filthy flesh would melt, melt and resolve itself into dew, or if the eternal had not set his canon 'against self- killing! O God, God, how tired, stale, flat and useless all the uses of this world seem to me! (1.2.32-36) Because of all the confusion and sadness, Hamlet becomes depressed and has deadly thoughts. Before the quote that Claudius and Gertrude got married, Claudius' new stepfather Hamlet teased him because he was still grieving over his father's death. Horatio then enters and begins talking to Hamlet. Hamlet is so shocked that once he hears about the apparition from Horatio he says this: “Tonight I will keep watch. Maybe he will “walk again” (1.2.258-259) Hamlet just needs closure and is willing to do ANYTHING to see his father again. However, Hamlet shows a strong hatred for Polonius and his daughter Ophelia by saying this: “Let her not walk at the conception of the sun is a blessing, but, how thy daughter can conceive, friend, take heed thereto.” (2.2.197-199)Before Polonius and Hamlet spoke, the king, queen, and Polonius spoke of Hamlet and Ophelia being married one day. Then Haml...... middle of paper...... dukedom, (3.4.27)Hamlet is back in town and still on a mission to avenge his father's deathHamlet: “For what man do you dig it? Gravedigger: For no man, sir. Hamlet: What women then? Gravedigger: For no one, either. Hamlet: Who will be buried there? Gravedigger: One that was a woman, sir, but, rest her soul, she is dead" (5.1.128-134)Hamlet jokes with the gravedigger not knowing that the grave he speaks of is Ophelia's grave. Next comes the Ophelia's corpse along with Laertes and part of Denmark. Hamlet and Laertes are confronted during the actual burial. In this play there is more than enough evidence to conclude that madness is often used Not only by the hamlet but by other characters. In the end everyone who sought revenge did what they had to do, but the problem was that many innocent people were also hurt.
