This means that I should resort to self-reflection of my experiences and expectations. I should strive to know myself, my philosophies, and why I believe in what I do. I feel that I am on an ongoing journey of self-discovery and that sometimes my discoveries reveal disconnects between my heart, my brain, and my faith, and I must recognize that my students are on a similar journey as well. By developing caring, compassionate, and accepting relationships with my students and their families, I am opening my heart and mind to new ideas, beliefs, and perspectives. It is my desire to also serve to open their hearts, minds and beliefs. Aristotle said: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is not education at all”. (Aristotle, 2015) Therefore, I firmly believe that the fundamental paradigm when considering multicultural education and diversity is the idea that multicultural education connects with people through their hearts and minds.
