But these social media apps are doing the opposite, people are not using them to stay in touch but more to compare their lives with their friends. Shawna Cohen wrote an article titled “FOMO: Fear of Missing Out” in which she describes a new social anxiety that has formed in recent years due to the creation of the smartphone and social media (141). This form of anxiety comes from people comparing their lives to those of the people they follow on these apps. Smartphone users are constantly bombarded with images of their friends having fun, living so-called interesting lives while sitting at home alone. Cohen raises a good point about society: we always want people to think we're interesting, so we tend to only share things online that make us look good and shy away from the average boring posts (142). Smartphones have allowed social media to become what it is today, and these social media apps meant to help people connect have a negative effect on their users. Cohen conducted a survey and more often than not smartphone users felt worse about themselves after looking at their social media apps, making people want to become even less social due to the negative feeling they were experiencing (142 ). The intention of the phone was to help people stay connected and be more sociable, but smartphones are going back in the wrong direction by causing anxiety in people and causing them to become less sociable than in the past.
