The titles of both poems contain extreme symbolic images to attract the readers' attention and make them think. In “Strange Fruit” the word strange is immediately associated with something different, strange, ugly, disgusting, inhospitable and bizarre. On the other hand, fruit is something sweet, delicious and healthy. When they are joined together the image that reveals itself is this disgusting rotten fruit hanging from a tree or fallen to the ground and everyone tries to avoid it, while at the same time making fun of it. When the title is put in the context of the poem and the era in which it took place, it is very sad to hear how African Americans were lynched in trees and everyone looked at them as a different, ugly, strange and not humane object. Conversely, the symbol of the two words strange and fruit is very varied and one is more positive while the other is negative, but combined together they have a totally contrasting connotation and present themselves in different ways. When we immediately say the word strange fruit we assume that this fruit is spoiled, crushed or disgusting, but we never consider the positive or good side of it.
